Mountain West Road Trip day 1: Home to Tres Ritos, NM

This is Plan D Boy Scout camp for Samuel and I.

After plans a, b, c fell through, we decided to do our own camp.  It's a fast paced mountain west tour.  Time will tell how much gets done compared to what is planned.

Today (7.14.2018)
Departed home.

First major stop
Bradbury Science Museum
Los Alamos National Laboratory

"Fat Man" and Little Boy

"Little Boy" and Fat Man

Next Stop: Tsankawi (sp) Ruins Trail in the Bandelier National Monument.  Samuel discovered and planned this option, and it was absolutely awesome.  Ancient pottery, homesites, petroglyphs, and the most remarkable carved out trails.

Next, it was time to find Tres Ritos.  We stopped for some groceries in Paoutagauche (something like that), and then went up New Mexico State Highway 503 for a free amusement park ride.  No pictures, but wish I had a video.

We took a wrong turn a little further east.  When the highways don't look like much and aren't marked, it's hard to tell if you are off the highway.  Plus, wireless reception is quite spotty up there, so Google maps was worthless.

Anyway, made it to Comales campground just north of Sipapu and Tres Ritos in time to set up our tent, get the generator and CPAP going, and go to sleep.

  1. Hopefully it's not as hot there as here.
